A little attention before a small fault gets worse
These are general care pointers. They do not replace an assessment of the door and locking hardware at your property.
A stiff key or handle
Do not force it. A stiff key can be a cylinder problem, but a door that has moved or a failing mechanism can produce similar symptoms. Follow the hardware manufacturer’s care instructions and ask for advice if the problem persists.
Moving home
Consider who may still hold keys. A lock change can give you control over the keys in circulation. Check the door type, lock compatibility and any insurer requirements before choosing a replacement.
A UPVC door that locks only when open
This can indicate alignment or other hardware issues. Avoid repeatedly forcing the handle. Describe what happens with the door open and closed when you contact the locksmith.
Before the locksmith arrives
Confirm the address, contact person, costs and access authorisation. Keep the area around the door clear where safe. After work, ask for a demonstration of operation and clarify any care or warranty information supplied.
